I grew up watching people get a second shot.
Quantum Leap was one of my favorites. Sam leaps into someone else’s life, tries to put right what went wrong, and he never gets to pick where he lands. Bill and Ted were two slackers who were supposed to fail history, until a phone booth from the future showed up and handed them a way out. Doctor Who had a guy who could change his face and his personality and still be the same man.
As a kid I didn’t think about any of it. It was just cool.
Now I’m 46, and I keep running into the same idea everywhere. Manga where a guy dies a loser and wakes up as his 15 year old self. AI generated YouTube videos with titles like “I died a failure, then woke up 10 years earlier.” The loser wins this time. The underdog finally gets it right.
I watch them. I like them.
One thing before I go on. I’m a Christian, and I have my own beliefs. I’m not here to mess with anybody else’s beliefs about reincarnation or whatever else. For me these stories are just interesting. Good fantasy, that’s all.

The questions I can’t stop asking
Here’s where my head goes.
What if you got reborn with your memory? You’d know everything. What to learn, what to skip, who to stay away from. But you’d also be a kid carrying a whole life nobody else remembers. Would you even act normal?
What if you turned back time but lost everything you learned on the way? Same fork in the road, same fear, same information. Would you make the same call? A lot of us probably would. That’s the scary part.
What if you came back as a different person altogether?
I’m Filipino, 46 years old. Say I was born in Germany instead. Or the US. Same year, same timeline, different country. Would I be the same guy? Same instincts, same stubbornness, same way of figuring things out? Or would I turn out completely different just because of where I started?
And this one messes with me the most. What if I woke up in the US in the 80s, but with my memories of growing up here? I spent more of my life in the Philippines than anywhere else. The customs I’m used to, how I talk, how I react to things. People would look at me weird. I’d be a stranger inside my own life.
Now flip it. What if I woke up there with no memories at all? Would I still be a screwup? Would whatever situation I’m in right now still find me?
I don’t have the answer. I’m not sure anybody does. That’s why I like the question.
My version of the fantasy
Mine isn’t one big regret. There’s no single moment I’d walk back to and fix.
It’s smaller than that, and somehow worse. It’s this thought: if I had learned this earlier, if I had picked the exact same path I’m on right now but started sooner, I’d be making a lot of money. So much that I’d never have to work again.
That’s the whole fantasy. Same road, earlier start, rich.
Then my own head asks the follow up. Would that version of me still be me? Would money that early have made me soft, or lazy, or somebody I wouldn’t recognize? Would it have screwed me over in a way I can’t see from here? Maybe the struggle is the reason I’m any good at what I do. I really don’t know.
And sometimes I catch myself using it as an excuse. If I was born in the US, would I be like this? If I was born in Australia, would I be like this? I’d have this, and I’d have had that, and I wouldn’t have this.
The heavy days
I’ll be honest about when the fantasy shows up.
It doesn’t come on good days. It comes when money is tight, when stress is stacking up, when burnout has me by the neck. Everything I can see in front of me looks hard, and I just want to quit.
On those days I think, I wish I could turn back time. I wish I could be reborn. I wish I was born somewhere else, into something else.
The weird part is it doesn’t help. Thinking about it makes my chest heavier, not lighter. The thing that’s supposed to be an escape makes me sadder, because the door isn’t real. I knew that when I was watching Quantum Leap as a kid and I know it now.
I don’t think I’m the only one. Most people have daydreamed this at some point. Go back to that one point, change it, get it right this time. Or at least come out rich on the other side.
The story of your life doesn’t end until you do. So I’m not going to wrap this one up either.
Anyway. That’s where my head is today.
